The Truth About Negative Thinking and Bad Moods

Abraham-Hicks and other law of attraction gurus state that you should avoid negative thoughts at all costs.

They say negative thinking and corresponding bad moods act as repelling forces. Your goal, they claim, is to 'feeeel good', or else you won't attract what you want.

While I certainly believe in feeling as upbeat and positive as possible, I also don't view negative thinking and bad moods as entirely harmful to one's success.

Besides my own periodic battles with melancholy (and paranoia), I know a few other ocassionally neurotic people who also happen to be extremely successful both personally and financially.

One person I know can't help but focus on the negative, especially when it comes to her work. Yet despite the constant complaining about her job and the people she works with, the girl just recently got promoted.

Additionally, her income is up nearly 300% in a little over a year (and we're talking six figures here, certainly not pocket change).

Grant it, she is a hard worker and a whiz in her field. But she's clearly not at all happy with the work she does. In fact, she admittedly hates it.

And it's not like she's irreplaceable either. From what I understand, there are quite a few people who would give up a limb to have her position.

This girl is a perfect example of attracting the opposite of what you focus on. She's also one of the reasons why I believe the 'feeeel good' philosophy of The Secret is overrated.

After perusing some of The Secret's reviews on Amazon.com, I discovered that other people experience success despite their negative thinking too. One customer writes:

"One last story about negative thinking, I wrote and performed in a play, at a small Toronto theatre. I financed it myself. I made the costumes and props and did most of the Publicity. We rehearsed and had some previews and then it was time for the night the critics came.

For two weeks I was convinced the critics would hate it. I was able to visualize their faces in the audience looking grim, bored and angry they had showed up. It was irrational but those thoughts obsessed me. That Opening night was also the night the heat didn't work and it was 12 degrees outside

The reviews came out the next week and it was a huge critical success. They all loved it! The play sold out for 8 months. So despite what the secret says, despite the law of attraction that works whether you believe it or not, I didn't attract bad reviews. I had worked very hard and despite my negativity and fear the play was a success."

Is it possible that Abraham-Hicks and The Secret have it wrong about negative thinking?

The answer appears to be ...yes.

New studies suggest that negative thinking and bad moods can actually be quite useful.

According to research conducted by Jing Zhouby, Associate Professor of Management at Rice University’s Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management, naturally occurring bad moods helps employees be more creative and productive:

"Bad moods and negative attitudes have gotten a bad rap at work. For years, negativity has been considered an unavoidable — and unfortunate — part of organizational life; something that should be minimized, criticized, even stamped out. But if you want creativity that leads to innovation in your workplace, those naturally occurring bad moods can play a fruitful role; in fact, they’re necessary to make things better."

Now be careful here. No one is saying that you should walk into work with a bad mood or put yourself in one for the sake of success. Instead, just realize that negative moods are normal, healthy and useful. Professor Jing explains:

"Negative moods should not be viewed as detrimental. They should be understood and treated as a necessary part of the creative process. I’m not advocating that managers go out and promote bad moods. But bad moods occur naturally, and when they do, managers should use these opportunities to encourage employees to identify potential problems and think of ways to improve things."

And...if you're a business owner, you should be thankful for negative and complaining people...

Why? Because negative and complaining people, a.k.a unsatisfied customers, can help you improve your business.

In fact, customer complaints are one of the best ways to improve service and products.

Since most people who complain are upset, they are more likely to speak their minds by telling you exactly what youve done wrong. By listening to customer complaints, business owners can make the necessary changes to succeed and stay ahead of the competition.

But the business environment isn't the only place where bad moods and negative attitudes are helpful...

Researchers at the University of New South Wales School of Psychology have found that individuals in a positive mood aren't as reliable as eyewitnesses who are negative.

Apparently, if you're happy while observing an event your memory is more likely to include irrelevant and unreliable information:

"People in a positive mood such as happiness were shown under experimental conditions to have relatively unreliable memories, and show poorer judgment and critical thinking skills.

By contrast, those who experienced a negative mood such as sadness were shown to provide more reliable eyewitnesses accounts and exercise superior thinking and communication skills."

Imagine that. According to the research, even our most negative moods and thoughts serve a purpose. One of those purposes is the ability to think critically on a much higher level.

In my opinion, The Secret and Abraham-Hicks' philosophy of 'feeeeeling good' is actually a suppression of critial thinking.

Keep in mind, The Secret promotes 'feeeeeling good' despite what your current feelings and reality are. This is very similar to what a cult espouses.

Now, I'm not saying The Secret is a cult. But it is very cult-like in that it suppresses critical thinking and actually promotes a concept of 'ignorance is power'.

Massimo Pigliucci Ph.D, professor of Ecology and Evolution at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and an advocate of science education said it best:

"The Secret is apparently a “theory” of channeling, the idea that by feeling something (positive or, more disturbingly, negatively) you somehow get the universe to “vibrate” in a way that will make your feelings determine physical reality. No need to worry about how this exactly (or even approximately) works: “Our job is not to worry about the 'how.' The 'how' will show up out of the commitment and belief in the 'what'.” Wow, Francis Bacon said that knowledge is power, thereby ushering in the era of modern science, but this is even better, here ignorance is power! Which perhaps explains why The Secret has been so prominently featured on Oprah Winfrey and the Larry King show."

Again...I'm not suggesting that it's better to be negative or in a bad mood. On the contrary. I feel a person should always strive to be as positive and upbeat as possible.

But what I am saying is that as human beings we have a wealth of feelings and attitudes at our disposal; some good, some bad. And they are all useful to some degree.

The idea of walking through life in a constant state of self-coerced happiness, even when reality suggests otherwise, smacks to me of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.

You'll recall that humanity in Aldous Huxley's dystopian novel is carefree, healthy and technologically advanced. War and poverty have been eliminated and everyone is in a constant state of bliss.

But the reason everyone is in a state of bliss is because of a powerful hallucinatory stimulant called soma. Citizens use soma as a means of escaping pain and bad memories.

The Secret, with its huge popularity and success, is clearly a form of soma in my mind.

I don't know about you, but I actually enjoy some of my less than happy moments. They make me realize where I've gone wrong as well as what I need to do in order to change and get better.

I like the way another Amazon customer put it:

"You have two sets of feelings: good feelings and bad feelings. And you know the difference between the two because one makes you feel good, and the other makes you feel bad." This seems to wipe out several dimensions of human emotional experience. What about ambivalence? ("I'm happy about the job offer in LA but, gosh, I'll really miss my family and friends in Boston.") Are we wiping out the concept of bittersweet? Isn't it a balance of a range of emotions that makes us human?"

On March 8, 2007, CNN's Lary King Live featured critics of The Secret. One of the critics (actually the only critic on the guest panel) was psychologist Dr. Robi Ludwig.

When asked by Larry King if she thought it was a good idea to eliminate negative thinking, Dr. Robi responded with perhaps the best analysis of all:

"I don't know. Because sometimes the negative is a really important teacher and we grow sometimes and learn way more from things that are painful than positive experiences. I think we need to find a way to have all of our emotional experiences and still figure out how to get what we want."

So, next time you find yourself thinking negatively or in a bad mood, just keep this in mind...

...even negative feelings and bad moods have their place in this world
.

What a highly thoughtful and insightful post. I agree that you need to allow your negative thoughts to surface and you must find a way as a mature adult to deal with them. Often the negative thoughts are a clue that something is not right or something's stirring inside you that you need to deal with. To simply shelve nagative thoughts and go around singing "Happy, happy, joy, joy" is just a sign that you're further repressing what's truly going on and then one day you just might end up going postal on your child, throwing a temper tantrum over a small infraction of service at a retail outlet, or you'll find yourself carrying 50 extra pounds when you don't deal with your emotions.
Thanks for this site--it's a great one and it's highly intelligent and well thought-out, something Rhonda Bryne could not provide to save her life!

I agree. This is a very good post. All of our feelings serve a purpose. Bad situations and the negative attitudes they cause are some of our greatest teachers. If you think about it, where would any of us be without bad moods, frustration, discontent? We certainly wouldn't have some of science's greatest discoveries.

Think of Thomas Edison. Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. He tried 10,000 times to perfect the light bulb. I'm sure there were times when he was really negative and down in the dumps. Yet each setback led him to the final outcome. And thank goodness for that.

Hi Calista. I appreciate your blog and this post in particular. I've met quite a few A-H students over the past couple of years, and I find that many of them are what I call "frightfully overjoyed." Way, way out of balance and stuffing down any negative emotions per Marge Simpson's advice.

What Jim, anon, and Lana said, Calista -- great post.

In my younger days I went out with more than one positive-thinking dork who told me I was "too negative." Couple of employers mentioned that as well. And come to think of it, I've been told the same thing a few times recently, mostly in comments to my blog.

It's true that I do err a bit on the negative side at times. But I submit that being negative, and even a mite cynical, has kept me sane.

Well, saner than I would be otherwise. :-)

Your site just keeps getting better and better. Keep it up!

Jim, unlike Rhonda's two and a half weeks of education on the subject, I have just a few weeks more...

FROM NEWSWEEK: "Wattles's book struck such a chord with Byrne that she plunged into a crash Course in Western, Eastern, ancient and modern thought, devouring "hundreds" of books and articles in just two and a half weeks. "

You mean THE Thomas Edison who, according to Ms. Byrne, knew of and used The Secret?

Interestingly, this quote referring to Edison is posted on John Demartini's website:

"He accepted almost nothing without testing it."

Hmmm...I wonder what Edison would think of The Secret?

lana writes...

Lana, that is such a perfect description. They sure do frighten the heck out of me. And worse...Esther Hicks is now Oprah's new bud.

There will soon be a lot more of 'em. Yikes!!

LOL!

Sounds like we have a lot in common.

Another fab piece! Nice posts also that reflect people are still using critical/analytical thinking skills despite popular opinion not to do so!

History shows us some of the greatest contributors to the arts and sciences endured periods of disappointments, depression and hardships not only the successes. Doesn't that alone indicate there must be something positive to be said for experiencing the full realm of emotions? lol

Where will it end? Will they ask to remove the works of Steinbeck, Hemmingway and the Bronte sisters from curriculum because they are 'downers' and were 'negative people'? ... Will freshmen and sophomores instead be reading the 'S' and studying the Abes because it makes them 'feel good'? ... Will we disown the discoveries of some of our greatest scientists because the process of elimination itself involves "giving thought", "action/work", "judging/discernment" and, therefore, is negative?

Negative me: I'm still attempting to discover whether it's the 3rd or the 5th viewing/reading of the 'S' when the Stepford-chip secretly implants itself.

Positive me: If I could only manifest the removal device, I'd be happier! (Worry not, if such were possible, I'd share them for free as a 'love offering' to mankind.)

Thanks for another wonderful taste of reality!

Dee, you obviously did not get the memo. Or more precisely, you didn't read Joe "Mr. Fire" Vitale's Sept. 11, 2006 blog post, in which he wrote that Rhonda Byrne herself said that studies show that after SEVEN viewings of "The Secret" your brain is permanently transformed. So there's still hope for anyone who has viewed the DVD less than seven times.

Fantastic post, good job.

I (somewhat unfortunately) had gotten the domain feelgoodgirl.com prior to Rhonda Byrne hijacking the concept of feel good. But I have defined feel good thusly:

"Feeling Good is not about being mindlessly "happy" and nicey-nice all the time. True Feeling Good is about a deep sense of inner satisfaction, self-worth, and peace with the world. Feeling Good has nothing to do with your age, your social status, the amount of money you make, or your accomplishments in life. Feeling Good is about expressing the highest version of yourself authentically and honestly."

More here:

Keep up the good work.

Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for the kind words!

I'll agree with your concept of feeling good. I love the "authentically and honestly" part. I think The Secret misses this entirely.

Good luck with your website.

Totally agree, overcoat in the comparison you did with the book of A.Huxley. It really seems prophetic!!!!
What I think about the movie that is more wounding, is that it makes you feel guilty of those bad things that you have in your life. It seems to me absurdity.

I think the true Secret to life is to get through it. Not feeling good or feeling bad but a balance of the two. I have experienced the full gamet of emotions during my 29years. After suffering a Psychosis which was brought on from the stress of trying to help a friend who was an alcoholic and numbing my emotions by using alcohol and cannabis.
I ended up in a mental home and was put on Anti-Psychotics. I was told by the Doctors that I was going to have to be on these drugs for years and that i would never be the same. Basically they took away my hope and the drugs I was on caused me to feel terriable, numb and lathargic. I was let out of the nut house after 10days, which apparently was a very quick turn around and taken back to my parents. It was summer so I decided to buy a tent and sleep out in the garden so I could avoid my parents and their mood swings and just be on my own. The drugs were so powerful that i would have anxiety attacks and wake up in cold sweats. Little things like going for walks and standing up proved difficult as the Haliperidol I was on had an effect like you were carrying a huge weight on your shoulders. I remember I decided to do work experience with the BBC in London, and was sitting on the Underground train feeling really sick and dizzy.A lady with a baby next to me was complaining that I hadn't given up my seat so she could sit down. Normally I would have offered my seat without thinking twice about it. I knew that if I stood up I would fall but the experience made me think that being on this drug was worse than the risk that I may have another psychotic episode. With the help of my father i got my Dr to agree that i shouldn’t be on the drugs. The sense of relief was incredable and i stopped taking them. However worse was to come. The numbing effect of the drug had bottled up my emotions and in the weeks that followed i plummeted into a deep depression. It got to the point that i was ready to kill myself. I was having thoughts every day about how and where i would kill myself. However in those darkest days laying in my tent sobbing I always kept in my mind the meaning of life as i saw it. To get through it. So i refused to give up and took one day at a time. 6 months later i was shown the Secret DVD and took on board the philosophies. I have always been a positive thinker and have led an incrediable life travelling the world, doing all the things i have wanted to do. I’ve never had much money but have worked my way around, saved hard and gone for it. After watching The Secret i suppressed the negative thinking and dwelled only on the Positive thoughts. I then made the mistake of having another cannibis spliff which triggered another psychosis and put me back in the nut house. However this time i learned from my previous mistakes and kept completely positive throughout.I didn’t let any doubt or fear enter my mind and was let out after a week. As soon as i was out of hospital i stopped taking the Anti-Psychotics and just trusted my emotions. I knew the best judge of what was right for me was me and i led a rapid recovery from my Psychosis. I basically went full circle as the second psychosis fixed me and restored me. A couple of months later i was checked out by 3 Dr’s who couldn’t find any signs of me ever having had a Psychosis. They just couldn’t understand it. I told them it was because i had totally focused on getting better and just done what i felt like.

I agree with most of the previous comments and would say that balanced people don’t walk around with Perma Grins on their faces. You learn from the bad times and the good times are a reward from learning from those mistakes. There’s nothing wrong with negative thinking but if you dwell on those thoughts that’s when things can spiral out of control. It is the same with being overly positive. Shit happens and things can get you down. Trying to suppress these feelings with being overly positive can be just as bad and in my case I suppressed them by trying to help someone who didn’t want to be helped. Which led to my downfall. Who wants to be a Ned Flanders anyway. In The Secret they concentrate on The Law of Attraction but i would use Science to explain life another way. Look at an atom. It is consists of a Proton, Neutron and Electron. Positive, neutral and Negative. So a balanced person and mind is also some times Negative and sometimes Positive. I guess the key is how you express yourself. Using tact and diplomasy allows you to be neutral and therefor balanced.

I haven't read everything here, but I wanted to comment on the idea that someone that hates their job can make a lot of money. Those are two seperate things. She loves money and feels good about having a lot of money, so she attracts a lot of money. Now in regards to her job, she hates it and yet she stays there, why? Because she's attracting more of what she hates, i.e. her job.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not here to "prove you wrong" - only to help you expand on your knowing - for what you know is right, and true, bad feelings are not something to be surpressed or ignored ...

Your comment illustrates something very profound about The Secret; It's the Scam of the Ages. It's the perfect crime. There's an explanation or nuance for everything.

No matter how you slice, it just can't be wrong.

And to that, I say BULLSHIT.

It seems as the though the Abraham-Hicks teachings are completely lost on people here. It's a shame because The Secret was so commercialized that it removed much of the stuff that makes all of this come together. Abraham-Hicks never directs people to suppress negative emotions. She teaches people to reach for the best feeling possible in any given situation. If someone's down-in-the-dumps depressed, she would encourage them to be angry or vengeful as a better-feeling emotion, then maybe cynical then after that hopeful up into the even better feeling emotions. The advantage of this is that it becomes easier and easier to feel good because LOA will attract things that make you happier, and vice versa. There are many other things that she says that clarify these misconceptions, including "source energy" and "vibration", things which were completely edited out of The Secret and have literally been censored out of most major texts dealing with this subject for thousands of years. But one thing that Abraham-Hicks does make clear is that whatever you believe will only be reinforced by your reality. So if you believe this is all a hoax, all evidence will continue to confirm your beliefs. So you're always right no matter what. And isn't being right what you want to be?

So you attract BOTH what you love and hate? Wow, that would mean you would attract everything just by lovin' or hatin' it! How convenient? I'd love to see the evidence of that. Or else it's pure bullshit.

Calista, very nice post. I've learned a lot from your post!

Yeah negative thinking does great for wars, hating your neighbours, hating yourself, hating life, hating being human.
I'am all for balance but not one-sided views.
Positive actions compliment negative actions in the most unbiased way i could say this.
Fear creates strength, strength creates solitude, solitude creates peace.
Mind can be logical and logic is balance.Love is what is important and both the veiws of the secret and the views of the peoplke do not show this. Love conquers all. Love and appreciation of everything you are grateful brings peace, harmony, solitude and balance to our lives and the world.

Noted quantum physics expert Scientist Bob Proctor and his pals, as well as nearly 2,000 personal-growth junkies, are taking over an entire ship in October! The Reverend Michael Beckwith, is going to be on board as well, raising the vibe by perpetrating a special meditation every morning. Also appearing will be several other renowned hustledorks self-help stars whom Scientist Bob is raving about but most of whom, frankly, I’ve never heard of.

Alas, for some reason, it doesn’t look as if Bob’s former co-hort, Aussie Secret star David Schirmer, is going to be on board. And the two of them were so good together! (Check out the ACA Interview online where David was exposed for FRAUD in Australia - Bob and David are now being investigated by the Australian Securities Commission for Breaking the Law and fooling/stealing for Investors. Many of their company’s have been suspended and the they may face jail time and a hefty fine. Bob and david are both partners in the SGR Program).

On the cruise Bob will also be featuring New Thought star Mary Morrissey, whose husband Edward served prison time for laundering money and using funds from his wife’s church for personal expenses, so maybe there will be something of a sense of continuity. (It should be noted that Mary herself was never charged with a crime, and I am sure she knew absolutely nothing about what Eddie was up to.) Anyway, according to the Son of Bob - Brian Proctor, “Mary Morrissey will be on board to do a program with Bob Proctor that will be introduced for the first time on the ship.” Here’s more info about what will be happening when the Self-Love Boat sets sail.

There will be plenty of opportunities on the cruise for you to learn how to get rich quick, or, even more important, make Bob and his friends richer. F’rinstance, there will be an opportunity to get in on Bob’s Science of Getting Rich program (Which is an Illegal MLM Scheme). And there will be all sorts of additional programs, products, and services to help you max out your plastic.

No doubt about it, the Mexican Riviera will never be the same. In fact, with a couple thousand aggressively self-improving folks on board, who knows what profound Earth changes will occur? The resulting vibes could be overwhelming; this might just be the event that causes not only California, but the entire West Coast of North America, to finally break off and sink into the ocean.

And even if that doesn’t happen, there’s something else that might be a red flag for the potential cruiser: the possibility of body-snatcher or walk-in situations. If you watch the video on the site I linked to above, you’ll hear Scientist Bob saying that he guarantees that each person who walks up that gangplank onto the ship will be a completely different person by the time he or she disembarks.

So I’d be careful if I were you.

PS ~ Some lyrics that popped up in my head…(the doors - Ship of fools)…

It’s no surprise that the secret has many more secret’s. I’ve just found out that Dr. Joe Vitale a teacher featured in the secret is not an actual doctor. He just gave himself that title inorder to build credibility. Why am i not surprised. That’s exactly what david did when he said he was worth millions. Credibility in an Internet Marketer (Scammers) best friend it allows them to get peoples trust and more importantly their money. I’ve searched the internet and consulted with professors at Local Universities - There is no such thing as a doctorate in Metaphysical studies which Joe Vitale claims to have. God, I feel sorry for all those poor people that invested with him after watching the secret.

Since this is new news, I’d appreciate it if some of you spread the news just like you’ve done with David Schirmer to prevent other unsuspecting people/investors from getting burned.

Also while we are on the subject I’ve done some digging behind Michael Beckwith another teacher in the secret and cannot find any information on the doctorate he claims to have…I really hope he didn’t fake his doctorate to gain popularity…he was my favourite teacher.

It seems like the LOA has ultimately back fired on the Secret Teachers and Rhonda Bryne. Reminds me of the saying “The Hunter has finally become the hunted”. For the people these guys have conned I hope they spend and eternity in hell.

I apologize for my language but I’ve lost a ton of money to these people and I’m not to happy about it.

I think that if everyone argues about whether suppression of the negative (i.e. slaphappy positiveness) or conscientious critical thinking (negativity, normally) then the point is lost.

Human beings have the power to manifest their own reality. Whether through "BEING a lotto winner" or whether by "WANTING (suffering) a winning lottery ticket).

The point is people are creators. They are not slaves. They are not workers. They are not beings that evolve or move through time with no purpose or end.

Human beings are supposed to create, because they are the only being (we have proof of) that has the ability to PURPOSEFULLY create.

Next is to PURPOSEFULLY MANIFEST.

Whether it be buy negativity or positivity. Humans will manifest spontaneously.

There is more energy potential in CONSCIENCENESS than in muscles and tendons, macines, engines, cogs etc, etc, etc.

DONT FIGHT THE SECRET, JUST TRANSCEND IT.

Fighting it gives it power. Transcending it means you take what is true and leave what isn't beneficial. Same goes for the critical thinking and science.

Keep the worst part about science is that it completely ignores intuition without evidence...... Until the secret.

And if you think there's more energy potential in consciousness than there is in machines and cogs and so forth, I dare you to stand in the street as I drive right into you at 80mph with my BMW M5.

Let's see who wins, shall we?

Great post!

While I agree that negative thinking has its function in our lives, I did get out of The Secret that we should not dwell in negativity, which is something I've always tended to do. Life gets bleak if you don't have a balance.

What the Secret woefully lacks is the advice on how not to be negative all the time. "You have to feel good." The Secret almost invalidates the sources of people's pain, saying to let it all go and "so what," which is fine to an extent, but happiness is not going to come out of that. I can't "pretend" to be happy when I'm not.

Accountability for life circumstances and karma is a good thing. But I don't think we're necessarily to blame for bad patterns, or what life throws at us. People who are spiritual speak of a "plan," which makes them think that maybe this universe isn't such a hapless fate factory. But saying that "you are attracting all bad things that happen to you" is a dangerous proposition. It blames the victim, always.

Whatever patterns cause negativity, I find that they can be counteracted in most cases by simply knowing how to stand up for oneself. This is an increasingly master-slave world, with 1% of the population making 21% of the world's wealth. This suggests that most people don't know how to say "no, this isn't cool" and live out of fear of losing a job or falling out of favor. The world is getting to be kind of alarmingly punitive. No wonder people are looking for ways to control everything--they're dominated by, employed by and live with controlling personalities.

I think the Secret can have some use in that people should be assured that they are empowered, and that empowerment doesn't always have to mean bullying others. It can mean that you have the ability to reverse bad tides and be happy and create a better environment. But lots of people are not equipped or experienced in balancing out the negative thoughts, and hence, you get a set of people who fake their happiness.

I do believe in visualization and focus and meditation and generally whatever helps bring calm into the picture. My temper can be scary when I think about the bad patterns and when another bad pattern rears its ugly head. It's frustrating--dealing with both the temper and the memories. Too much negative thinking I've found, inhibits critical thinking at times, by its overwhelming volume and ability to blow up like a balloon. Flipping over to positive, into an "acceptance" mode, doesn't give me all the answers either. Being calm and choosing battles, and having the wherewithal to choose wisely, takes time to learn.

There are things that can be taken from the Secret, but implementing constant positivity? I don't think it's in our nature.

Great discussion thanks for that.

In the secret it is all (or most) about achieving wealth and I always had, let´s say, a less positive feeling about the whole secret bubble....
Beeing in the healing `business´ i realized a few things: Life is not always following `laws´, wealth is certainly not a guarantee for health and what we achieve on the ´outside´ is not always a reflection of our ´inside´.

Read below an article I wrote on my Blog on curezone (dorn method blog): (happy to get feedback on this)

Do we need negative experiences and sickness?

My answers here are actually my own limited way of seeing it only.
Why we ‘need’ negative experiences and sickness to grow? And how long we need it? Life is constantly changing it is never in a stand still isn’t it? Therefore we have to go with the flow of life. Life is also keeping everything in a balance that is a universal law. Is there an end? I do not know and I do not waist my energy on trying to understand things I can’t understand (at least at this time of my life). The way is the goal, once we reach our goal we realize that it is only the end of a part of the way and new paths are again opening in front of us.
There is also always more than one way and we have the freedom of choice. There may be a Universal plan for Life however the given possibility of choice allows us to be part of this wonderful creation quasi as co-creator.
Sickness is something we most certainly judge as ‘negative’ right? Something we want to change and life is all about change so ‘negative’ experiences are the driving force in life.
It makes us also see and experience what we ‘judge’ as good. You can’t know what light is without knowing the darkness.
Our development in this sense is literally step by step constantly going through trial and error and if we stop moving we start dying.
Not always we experience complete ‘cure’ of an ailment but still we can heal ourselves. Example: Someone may experience to be paralyzed after an accident and can only move using a wheelchair or worse. There might not be a change to this in this lifetime so does this mean that person can’t change things anymore? Does it mean that person is better dead? Think on what Christopher Reeves made out of his situation. The Moment someone accepts his present life situation with love and starts to move on rather than giving up the healing starts.
So we have always a choice how we want to go through our life: If we do everything in cooperation with “life” or nature and keep it in balance, always think positive, act with love towards all and live “health”-conscious chances are that we have few problems feel happy and content and live a live full of bliss.
If we violate this concept chances are that we suffer the consequences and a ‘repair’ might prove difficult or even ‘seems’ impossible. The choice is ours!
Some other things for you to think about: Are we beings who have a physical body that is the host of our soul (spirit, higher self) or are we beings who have a spiritual body that is the host of our physical appearance? Or something completely different than that?
Are we maybe just a by-product of evolution, kind of a coincidence of nature?
Are we part of this Universe or separate to it? If we are part of this Universe (creation) isn’t it than a fact that all and everything is connected?
I see life as game and I enjoy playing. I enjoy that I am able to choose which way the game goes and certain ‘unknown’ factors brings a moment of excitement into my game. As soon as I reach the goal I realize that I just have to roll the deice and a new game starts. Every game has ‘rules’ some can be ‘bended’ a little others are ‘fixed’.
The fixed rules I call ‘Spiritual Laws’ and I like how they are described in the book of Prof. Kurt Tepperwein (in german, `Die geistigen Gesetze´).
Hope you enjoy these thoughts of mine and find some helpful.
Blessings

I applied the 'secret' not long after learning about it, i visualised a wallet full of money, and five minutes and a phone call later i had a couple of extra contracts worth $4,000 each and i got the wallet (nice leather one) for free the next day after winning a competition.
it continues to work when i need a new idea or inspiration, so for me the secret is a good thing. I see the 'feeling good', as natures brain reward for advanced behaviours that are good for our long term survival ie. cooperating nurturing, creating, intelligence ... Negative feelings are when things need to be done another way perhaps or a solution is needed. negtive feelings are more like surviving mode, selfishness and me, me, me, me, mentality and good feelings are like thriving mode, sure people can get stuff done feeling negative all the way, complaining and only looking for what is wrong, and hating every moment of it, getting good results in the end, but not me, no thanks id rather feel good than bad, and when i do feel bad, it not very long until the solution is found, we all have our ways of percieveing reality, but ego and the need to be RIGHT can mess things up sometimes, i enjoyed reading your post and the references, i dont really agree with your way of looking at things but thats ok, ill try to see it from your perspective for educational purposes hehe
have a breakthrough day !!!

Karl,

Just out of curiosity, what kind of competition hands out wallets to the winner?

It's not that I don't believe you...
